LODGE IN THE DESERT
ARCH 100D: Prof. Jasmit Rangr | Academic | Spring 2022 | Flagstaff, AZ
Nestled amidst majestic mountains and sprawling deserts, the site experiences significant fluctuations in temperature on a daily basis. The accommodation, located in close proximity to the Grand Canyon, is designed to offer a comfortable and enjoyable stay for numerous visitors. The lodge aims to provide guests with ample privacy while ensuring optimal temperature control for a memorable experience. The building incorporates passive strategies such as thermal walls, courtyards, overhangs, and carefully selected materials to regulate temperature and create a highly energy-efficient environment.

Funnel Shape allign with prevailing wind direction
In summer, during the day, the dominant wind blows from southwest to northeast, and the entrance becomes a funnel that collects fresh air to cool down the temperature for both the interior rooms and exterior courtyard.
At night, the wind blows in the exact opposite direction (from northeast to southwest), therefore there is no opening except the entrance facing this orientation

Courtyard strategy for efficient temperature control
The building boasts a central courtyard that serves as a unique feature. In the daytime, when the sun shines directly over the courtyard, the ground within it absorbs the solar radiation, resulting in the warming up of the air in the vicinity.
As a natural outcome, the heated air rises, prompting the Bernoulli effect to come into play, which then causes the still air to be drawn through the windows.
Consequently, cool air from outside flows through the other side of the openings in the room, creating a seamless airflow that efficiently regulates the temperature.

The overhang on the roof extends three feet out to block the high summer sun. In the restaurant, the extended roof also forms an outside dining area prioritizing the natural landscape view for the visitors
