ARCH 100C: Prof. Giovanni Betti | Academic | Fall 2021 | Berkeley, CA
The city of Berkeley has been facing a growing problem of psychological distress among its residents, and the shortage of mental health facilities has only worsened the situation. I am designing a space that caters to the needs of individuals recovering from mental illnesses. The design takes into account the specific needs of each user, such as the lighting condition, noise level, fresh air, and view. While some require natural daylighting and fresh air, others might need to be protected from sharp sounds and hard light. By creating a comfortable and personalized space, I hope to facilitate the healing process for those who are suffering from mental illness in Berkeley.

Testing Model
The building design involved experimenting with shortcuts, corridors, and overhangs at various locations.
By incorporating two shortcuts at the ends of the building, an open courtyard and an enclosed courtyard were created,
resulting in increased natural light and ventilation, as well as ease of movement throughout the building.
